Ophiopogon planiscapus Nigrescens (Lilyturf). Award of Garden MeritGo to Top of Page

Highly decorative dwarf perennial with grass-like purple-green strap-like foliage which gives the appearance of grass as it creeps slowly through the soil. In full sun the foliage later turns a rich black in colour. Once established, pale mauve-pink flowers develop from the clump of growth and are followed by blue-black berries. This plant makes a great mixer in beds and borders as well as using the compact habit to associate with dwarf rock garden bulbs, so perfect for rockeries. Relatively slow-growing, it makes attractive colonises which are effective against green foliage and fragile mauve-pink blooms. Height 8ins (20cm), spread 12ins (30cm).
Supplied in a 3 litre pot at around 12cm (5ins) high.

Asplenium scolopendrium (Hart's Tongue Fern). Award of Garden MeritGo to Top of Page

You frequently see this evergreen fern growing wild in shaded areas, often forming large 'drifts' under trees, amongst rocks and streams where its upright, pointed fronds (leaves) contrast strikingly with the soft shapes of damp-loving wild and cultivated flowers. This robust evergreen fern enjoys a wide range of soil types - well-drained, light soil, moist and boggy. It will grow in shade or semi-shade, but is a slow grower so will not overrun your borders. Little attention is required apart from annual mulching in February and a tidy in the spring. Height 1-2ft (30-60cm), spread 10-20ins (25-50cm).
Supplied in a 3 litre pot at around 35cm (13ins) high.

Supplied in a 3 litre pot at around 20cm (8ins) high.

Dryopteris affinis Crispa (Buckler Fern). Go to Top of Page

Virtually evergreen fern producing a shuttlecock of lance-shaped golden-green pinnate fronds (leaves) which darken in colour with age. The large, handsome clumps grow best in sun or dappled shade. Soil wise, moisture retentative if on the light sandy side, but this fern will do well in any soil. Like all ferns, it is essential you keep the plant uniformly moist during its first season of establishment. Height 24-30ins (60-75cm) eventually forming clumps 3ft (90cm) across, which can be divided in the autumn.
Supplied in a 3 litre pot at around 30cm (12ins) high.
