Discovered in Woodstock, Oxfordshire growing against the wall of Blenheim Park, and exhibited in 1822. Large golden flushed red crisp fruits of fine flavour. Suits heavy soil. Considered by many to be the best dual purpose apple. Very valuable garden variety. Makes a strong limbed tree with very hard wood which was used to make cog wheels for railways! Suitable for colder areas and is more resistant to frost.

This plant is registered for Plant Breeders' Rights. Propagation by unlicensed growers is prohibited.

Crab apples such as Golden Hornet and John Downie also are good pollinators for all apples. In areas where there are many apple trees already growing it may not be necessary to plant an extra pollinator.
