Stocks - Compact, bushy and easy to raise plants with a glorious fragrance which are ideal for bedding or for growing in drifts in the border. The large, showy richly fragrant flower spikes come in a range of pinks, purples, creams, whites and yellows. They also make magnificent winter flowering pot plants for the cold greenhouse. Flowers late summer. Hgt. 30cm (12in).
Sowing Instructions. Sow in spring, 1.5mm (/16in) deep in a good free draining compost, but do not exclude light, which is beneficial to germination. Germination usually takes 8-12 days at 15-18C (60-65F). They can also be sown outdoors in spring where they are to flower and in mild districts, in late summer/autumn. This later sowing will often produce flowers in winter as well as spring and plants can be potted up into 13cm (5in) pots in autumn and brought into a cold greenhouse.
Growing Instructions. Transplant when large enough to handle into boxes. Grow under cool conditions. Gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions for 10-15 days and plant out 30cm (12in) apart into ordinary soil in sun or part shade.
