Dense, upright, fast growing evergreen with long glossy heavily spined leaves, dark green above, pale green beneath. Masses of clusters of yellow, or sometimes red tinged flowers wreath the shoots in spring followed by edible, bloomy, blue-black egg-shaped fruits in autumn. Quickly forms an impenetrable hedge. Shade tolerant. HEDGE Trim after flowering. For hedges 4-7ft (1.2-2.1m). Plant 1.5-2ft (45-60cm) apart. SHRUB 10ft x 11ft (3m x 3.4m).
