The tradition of alpine propagation at Buckingham goes back to the founder of the Nursery, the late Mr John Brown who started the Nursery after the war growing alpines, and in those days cacti, from a greenhouse at his home. It is believed that some of the alpines and perennials grown today come from his original stock, but the nursery is now a far cry from the one man operation it started as. His son and daughter-in-law now run the business employing up to 50 staff in the busy season.

From the humble beginnings in west London, it moved firstly to Harrow-on-the-Hill, trading then as Byron Hill Nurseries, then in 1970 moved to the eleven acre site just outside Buckingham. Recently it has been upgraded to a high standard making it easier to see the plants and giving more space in a lighter, larger shop. However, plants and garden related products are still the main emphasis, the only indulgence being a small restaurant which serves good, wholesome home cooked meals, with some of the vegetables and herbs grown on site. The Garden Centre has been designed so all areas are accessible to wheelchair users and we are delighted to see so many take advantage of this fact.

With the large acreage of land at the Garden Centre there has been room over the years to plant many sample hedges, some of these are now mature and others only recently planted. This does give the customer the opportunity to look at the hedges at different stages during the year and decide which would be really suitable for their garden, rather than just choosing from a catalogue, albeit, a catalogue with detailed descriptions and cultural information plus coloured photographs.

Plants have always been our priority, and alongside these runs an excellent shop well stocked with a very wide range of seeds, tools, watering equipment, fertilisers, chemicals and most goods a gardener will need, plus a newly established Aquatics Centre.
