‘Scardy Cat’ Coleus Canina
Have we at last the answer in keeping those lovable to many but
hated by others felines away from our gardens? It seems we may have,
at least in the summer frost free months. This answer to many a
gardener’s prayer is sitting in pots in the top protective
tunnel at the moment in the form of Coleus canina, otherwise known
as ‘Scardy Cat’.
Coleus canina not only truly repels cats, but putting it near the
nose of Annie and Sasha, the resident Garden Centre dogs, we could
see they were obviously not keen either! The scent comes from all
the plant but particularly from the flower. There are no flowers
on the plants at present so the leaves must be pretty effective
as well.
Coleus canina was bred in Germany (known there as Pxxx-Off Plant!)
as a unique introduction to the animal deterrent market. It is a
cross between Plectranthus and Coleus and was first cross bed in
Australia by an amateur home gardener. As it is not frost hardy
you will have to re-plant every year, but if you have an area you
can keep frost tender plants in the winter it roots easily from
soft shoot cuttings. We shall be interested to have feed back from
anyone who purchases some of these plants.

Smilacina racemosa
We have at last a supply of Smilacina racemosa, a herbaceous perennial
we are often asked for but unable to supply. It has arching, light
green leaves with feathery sprays of white flowers in spring to
mid summer, followed by reddish berries. If you have been looking
for one do come quickly as stocks are limited.

Garden Furniture
In the shop new sets of furniture seem to be appearing every day.
We have an ingenious extending table, which once you have worked
out the knack of extending it and folding it back, is wonderful.
Its smallest size is 120cm, then it extends to 150cm and finally
to 180cm. The complete set of kempas hardwood table, 6 armchairs,
a 2m parasol, parasol base and cushion pads for the seats normally
retails at £664, but we are offering it at £599 while
stocks last. We have the ever popular Kiddies’ Gazebos at
£29.99, a new Kiddies’ hardwood bench for £29.99.
Garden benches run from £49.99 to £199 and the ‘instant’
3m Gazebo at £99.99 which proved very popular last year is
in stock again.
