Chenies Manor Plant and Garden FairCatch us at Chenies Manor

Chenies Manor Plant and Garden Fair will be held Sunday 20th July and we will be there! Do please come along. We’ll be creating a display garden within a wonderful topiary parterre in the grounds of the Manor. If you’ve never been, we strongly recommend it as the gardens to the Manor are wonderful (amazing beds and borders to dream over), the house is fascinating (listed in the Doomsday survey no less – even King Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn stayed at the Manor!) and the plant fair is well worth a browse. Fingers firmly crossed for some fine July weather. It’s very much a family event with a fun-packed Punch & Judy on hand to entertain the little ones.

You’ll find Chenies Manor on the A404 between Chorleywood and Little Chalfont. The Fair is open between 10am and 5pm and the house from 2pm and 5pm.

There is an entrance fee of £4 (children under 15 admitted half-price) and there’s a further charge of £3 to go into the house. Car parking is free.

Think big with must-have specimens

A new welcome addition to the ever-expanding Buckingham plant stable arrived in a 40ft articulated lorry at the garden centre few weeks ago – huge specimen shrubs!

New Specimen Plants AreaFuelled by the ‘quick-fix’ makeover approach to gardening (thanks Alan, Charlie, Tommy and Diarmuid!), we can all benefit from these amazing plants and create instant impact into our gardens – whatever their size.

We’ve shipped in many of the plants from Italy (they tend to enjoy a much longer growing season than we do) and we’ve also sourced a diverse range from our regular UK growers as well. The range includes larger abelia, box (Buxus), euonymus, fatsia japonica, escallonia, berberis, photinia, hebes, hydrangeas, ceaonothus as well as trained forms of clematis, cotoneaster and mouth-watering grapes. There are standard lollipop versions of bay trees, Italian privet and euonymus if you’re looking for a new front door plant. If you want to introduce a touch of the Mediterranean into your summer garden you can choose from olives, oleander, palms (three types - phoenix, chamaerops and trachycarpus) as well as stately cordylines and spiky agaves.

These plants are ideal for patio areas where instant effect is required and many will prosper in large ceramic or terracotta pots, provided they are re-potted into a gritty, open textured compost (we recommend 3-part John Innes No3, 1-part pulverised bark and 1-part lime-free horticultural grit).

If your soil is on the heavy clay side, don’t let this put you off establishing larger, more so-called ‘tender’ plant material. Incorporating plenty of lime-free horticultural grit into the ‘sub-soil’ as well as adding some into your usual planting compost in the base of the planting hole is all that is required.

So, next time you visit; do come have a look at our new arrivals! You might feel like Tom Thumb in a Lilliputian landscape, but set them into the garden and you’ll add drama and a great conversational piece – but, hey, who says all gardeners have to be patient!
