As our regular customers know each year the outside cover of our mail order catalogue changes colour and with the ‘go green campaign’ raging throughout the country we thought we should follow suit so our catalogue has gone green.

The main section is, of course, hedging and young trees and it is difficult some years to find something really inspiring to introduce but this year we had no problems when we came across Photinia Little Red Robin.  You will be familiar with Photinia Red Robin a stunning plant which, with its many new flushes of brilliant red leaves, has become a favourite with so many.  The new Little Red Robin is equally spectacular but a miniature version with all features in perfect proportion to its larger relative.  This will make a beautiful hedge between only two to three foot in height – a real find.

Also in the hedging lines we have introduced Hypericum Hidcote.  Many of you will know this familiar plant of the garden with its masses of large, two inch wide, showy, saucer-shaped, bright yellow flowers with prominent darker yellow stamens which appear continually between July and October.  Plant these about 18 inches (45cm) apart and they will form a very colourful and hardy hedge between three and four foot in height.

Those are the only two new hedge forms we can offer, but in the same section we have introduced Pin Oak (Quercus palustris).  A typically majestic oak with a silver-grey bark which becomes darker with age.  It has fresh green large leaves with very deep lobes and these turn rich scarlet-brown in autumn.  The great advantage of this variety is that it is tolerant of wet soil and also, surprisingly considering its tolerance to wet soil, also to hot town conditions.

Amongst the ornament shrubs we have added Hydrangea macrophylla Early Sensation (also known as Forever and Ever).  The unusual feature of this hydrangea is that it flowers on new and old wood, thus ensuring good flowering every year. From mid to late summer it produces large rounded heads of pink to blue flowers depending on the soil – pink on alkaline or blue on acid soils.  Like most hydrangeas is prefers dappled shade and moisture retentive soils.  It will grow to about 3-4ft with a spread of 3ft so is good for any garden with the right soil conditions and dappled shade.

A couple of interesting and useful herbs have been added – Lime Mint and Oregano Hot and Spicy.  The Lime Mint (Mentha piperita citrate Lime) has a strong fruity and spicy flavour with an aroma of lime.  It is a very attractive garden plant with smooth purple-tinged dark green leaves and deep lilac flowers.  The Oregano Hot and Spicy really lives up to its name as its flavour really is hot and spicy – nibble a leaf and you will experience the wonderfully tang.  It is attractive in appearance as well with dark green slightly hairy leaves which turn pale green in summer when the dainty white flowers appear.

There are four new ornamental trees – Cherry, Royal Burgundy, Cotoneaster Rothschildianus, Eucalyptus pauciflora Niphophila (Alpine Snow Gum) and Mountain Ash, Pink Pagoda.  The Cherry is unusual as it has deep purple leaves which tone beautifully with the deep pink double flowers. The vigorous evergreen Cotoneaster has masses of golden-yellow berries in late summer and autumn which stand out well against the green leaves.  The Eucalyptus, with the typical glaucous shoots and grey-green foliage of the eucalyptus family, has the advantage that it is smaller than the average only attaining a height of 18ft. Finally the Mountain Ash, as its name implies, has persistent pink berries in the autumn, these eventually fading to white.

In the Ground Cover and Perennials section there are some new varieties amongst the ever popular Bearded Irises, Crocosmias and Day Lilies, plus a completely new line – Everlasting Sweet Peas (Lathyrus latifolius) Pink Pearl, Red Pearl and White Pearl.  For those who have not grown everlasting sweet peas, they really are easy to grow and are colourful, reliable, fast growing with masses of sweet pea flowers.  They have all the excellent attributes to the annual sweet peas, the only down is that they do not have such a wonderful perfume, but if you are addicted to the perfume, grow a few of the annuals with their very heady perfume and when picking mix the two and you will have the advantage of both!

The only new climber is the Chocolate Vine (Akebia quinata), and really vigorous semi-evergreen with self-clinging tendrils.  In early summer it produces unusual deep purple blooms which carry a captivating spicy, chocolate perfume.  In a good hot summer, if cross pollinated, it will produce fascinating, large, pale purple sausage-shaped fruits.

In the really busy fruit section there are some interesting new additions the most interesting, perhaps, being Goji Berries.  They really do fruit in this country and we even have some fruit on the plants we are selling to prove it!  There are new varieties of Blueberries, Gooseberries, Raspberries, Rhubarb and also a new Walnut.

And finally we have an excellent new range of gardening gloves.  These have been tested by members of the plant team and all agree they are the best they have worked in for years.  Three different types for different applications – all are long lasting and machine washable.

So all in all plenty of new items to help you enjoy many hours of Happy Gardening!
